Hey, I’m Grace, a third-year Games Art and Design student at Norwich University of the Arts! I’m passionate about creating meaningful games which leave a lasting connection. I enjoy collaborating with fellow creatives and making ideas become a reality. As I prepare to graduate, my ultimate goal is to craft games that inspire positive change in the world!
My journey into the games industry has been a bit unusual. Growing up, I never considered a career in video games — currently, only 30% of industry professionals are women, and it simply wasn’t presented to me as an option (despite the endless hours I spent building worlds in The Sims and Minecraft). Initially, I pursued illustration, but deep down, I knew I wanted to push my boundaries and explore new creative horizons.
A few years before starting my new chapter at university, I have one strong memory shared with my younger sister: one Christmas, I asked for Uncharted 4, and the same day I turned on the PS 4 and sat down with my sister, completely and utterly enchanted by the game and its rich storytelling. I love the way my sister and I connected and bonded through the video game (often screaming in unison at the enemies and switching over when one of us died -- this did mean playing hot potato with the controller during highly intense scenes), and since then, we frequently go back to play chapters from the game. This feeling of connection with my sister through playing video games, was a special moment and now a core memory which I plan to cherish forever.
Just two days before starting university, I switched from Illustration to Games Art and Design — and I’ve never looked back.
At university, I’ve embraced my unique artistic voice through solo projects like Nullamo and Whisp. From skills in level and narrative design to leadership, I’ve grown into roles like Project Manager during game jams, which helped me develop a passion for guiding creative teams. When I look back in memory of the games my sister and I bonded over, I know it is something I want others to feel: a deep connection with those around them through playing video games.
A phrase I’ve heard during my time at university is, “You really stick out like a sore thumb!” For a while, I wasn’t sure how to take it. But now, I wear it with pride — because standing out is exactly what I want to do. I’ve learned that having a unique skillset and perspective within this course is one of my greatest strengths. To create change, you have to be the change, and I know that’s what I want to bring as a game designer. And if being the “sore thumb” helps me make an impact in the games industry, then I welcome it wholeheartedly.
The future is uncertain, but I’m determined to step into it with confidence, creativity, and ambition.
Three fun facts about me:
1. My all time favourite video game is Life Is Strange (Sorry, Chloe, I had to save Arcadia Bay!)
2. I wind down by knitting
3. I am currently writing a book!
